ABC 2019

A BEAR FOR ALL SEASONS

The Bear Care Group is pleased to announce our 2019 Advancing Bear Care conference in Scotland, UK 9th –13th October, in partnership with the Five Sisters Zoo and the UK Bear Husbandry Group. The conference theme is ‘A bear for all seasons’ where we will be exploring the impact of time and geography on bear husbandry. The conference will explore the importance of seasonality - in the literal sense such as in the seasonal management of our temperate bear species, and also across the species as we explore excellence in both temperate and tropical bear husbandry. Please join us and consider submitting your own work within this theme, for presentation at the conference!

BIAZA Certification Session

Throughout the Conference

This year’s Advancing Bear Care Conference incorporates a BIAZA-approved welfare assessment session.  We will explore what welfare assessment means for your bears, discuss a tool that you can use in assessing welfare in your own bears, and work with the Five Sisters Zoo to demonstrate bear welfare assessment. Participants will receive a BIAZA certificate and have the opportunity to participate in a research project at the University of Edinburgh, validating a welfare assessment tool for bears in zoos.
